Whovians are aware that Series 10 of Doctor Who is finally within grasp. After waiting so long, The Doctor will return worldwide starting on 15 April, 2017. Check your local listings for channels and times.
The new season introduces a new companion, Bill, played by Pearl Mackie. Returning for another spin around the time vortex is Nardole, played by Matt Lucas. Series 10 will mark the end of Peter Capaldi’s reign as the beloved Doctor but promises to have the adventures, monsters (both old and new) and a few secrets that fans have come to love and expect from The Doctor.
In a 10, April 2017 interview with NY Times reporter Dave Itzkoff, Peter Capaldi Prepares for His Final Season of ‘Doctor Who’, Capaldi was asked about what it was like to work with Pearl Mackie, the Doctor’s new companion:
My previous companion [Clara, played by Jenna Coleman] was someone who was really part of the Doctor Who world. Pearl’s character, Bill, is someone from the real world, if you like, who has no understanding and no knowledge about TARDISES and Daleks and monsters and all that stuff. She’s someone who has great potential, and the Doctor thinks that potential is not being realised, and decides it would be fun to help her.
Itzkoff also asked Capaldi a somewhat philosophical question mentioning that the UK and the US have been through a lot of upheaval in the last few months and asked what Doctor Who offers viewers during this time:
It offers hope for the power of kindness and intelligence and care. The Doctor is someone who sees the big picture and has seen how the human race is-he loves the human race because he sees its cruelty, but also astonishing kindness and heroism. The Doctor is a beacon of goodness, and that’s why he can survive all these different permutations…Because at heart, he is, in essence, a good creature. I think we need heroes like that.
Series 10 will also see the exit of Steven Moffat, writer and director of the show. Moffat will be handing the reigns over to Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch) for Series 11. Whovians have waited a long time for Series 10; however, as anticipated as it has been, it also seems to bring a tinge of sadness to Capaldi fans.
Doctor Who Series 10 premieres this Saturday, 15 April 2017, in numerous places worldwide including BBC One and BBC America. BBC America viewers will be treated to a Saturday marathon of Series Nine leading up to the premiere. Following the premiere of Series 10, BBC America will be showing the Season One Doctor Who spinoff, Class, followed by The Graham Norton Show featuring Peter Capaldi, Warren Beatty, Miranda Hart, Keeley Hawes and Jennifer Hudson.
